Car / Transport

The car sector currently represents over 40% of PEP's turnover and is its main client.

Plastics are an increasingly important part of cars: both in exterior components (25% of vehicle plastic) and interior components (over half the total vehicle plastic weight), and whether for components beneath the bonnet or chassis.

The car market is currently the 3rd largest destination market for plastics, after packaging and the building industry. It represents a turnover of 5.7 billion euros and a workforce of 44,000 employees (the turnover of the French plastics engineering industry is 31 billion euros, with a workforce of 151,000 employees).

Choosing plastics as a substitute for traditional materials such as steel or aluminium in the car sector is mainly to:

  • make vehicles lighter to save on fuel consumption and protect the environment,
  • increase conceptual and design freedom, while ensuring aesthetic quality,
  • improve vehicle and user safety as a result of innovative and increasingly high-performance plastics

Did you know?

Using plastics in cars has enabled their average weight to be reduced by 200 kg. This saves 500 litres of fuel every 100,000 km.
